Sarah smiled as she gently tucked a soft lavender blanket into the white cradle she’d set out the day before. She had spent several weeks turning an extra bedroom in her home into a nursery for her upcoming baby.

As she finished smoothing the blanket, Sarah felt tears of both sadness and joy stinging her eyes. In her youth, a horrible attack had left her body weakened and unable to bear a child. Later, her ex-husband had forced her to conceive, but the child had been stillborn, leaving her heartbroken and near dead herself. She never thought she’d get the chance to use the cradle her parents had given to her that had held her as a baby.

However, Sarah got her second chance at motherhood through an unlikely source; a young woman named Danielle.

Danielle was the daughter of Professor Ratigan, Sarah’s part-time lover and full-time pain in the butt. The two ladies had come to love each other as sisters, and Danielle was able to show just how much she loved her big sister when she offered to be a surrogate mother for Sarah and Ratigan. Dr. Dawson, a dear friend of them all, had taken the parts from each parent, combined them, and placed them inside Danielle’s womb; an unconventional process, but none of them were really used to convention anyway.

Sarah still remembered the day Danielle had told her and Ratigan that the procedure had worked and that she was pregnant with their child. She remembered how she had felt like her heart would explode from joy at any moment; she had been silent for the longest time, then she had buried herself into Danielle’s arms, the two of them hugging, crying and laughing all at the same time, tears of joy pouring down both their faces.

Just then, Sarah’s thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the nursery door. She blinked and looked up to see Ratigan standing at the doorway, holding a large box. “May I come in?”

Sarah smiled. “Of course, darling, please do.” She sat down in a rocking chair she’d set up, then motioned for him to sit in the armchair next to her, which he did, setting the box next to her. “I was just going through some old baby clothes of Dani’s; I thought we might want to use them for our own little bundle of joy.”

Sarah opened the box and smiled as she looked over the different adorable little outfits Ratigan had brought in. “Oh Padraic, these are just precious. Our little girl is going to look beautiful in these.” While the future parents were not positive what gender their baby would be, an old wives’ tale test that they had performed not long before told them that it would be a girl.

“I thought she might; especially if she has your genes.” Ratigan smiled lovingly at his girlfriend, then frowned when he noticed the tears in her eyes. “What’s wrong, mo gra? Aren’t you happy about our baby?”

“Of course I am,” Sarah answered. “I don’t think I’ve ever been happier in my life. I just…I wish…I wish I could…”

Ratigan smiled warmly and took her hand in his. “You wish you could do something like this for Dani, don’t you?” Sarah nodded, sniffling and drying her eyes with a handkerchief that he’d handed to her. “Sarah, my darling, you know that Dani didn’t offer to be your surrogate because she wanted anything back from you. You’re her big sister. She offered to be your surrogate because she loves you.”

“I know,” Sarah sighed. “I just…I wish there were something I could do to repay her kindness.”

Ratigan petted her dark chocolate brown curls. “You do repay her kindness, my dear; every day, you treat her with love and kind words. You cheer her up when she’s sad. You spend every chance you get showing her how much she means to you. You treat her like a sister.” He cupped her chin in his hand. “That’s all my Dani…OUR Dani…wants from you.”

Sarah smiled. “Thank you, Padraic.” She nuzzled into his arms.

“You’re welcome. Now, what say I take you out for lunch?”

Sarah giggled and rubbed her belly as it rumbled slightly. “I suppose I AM feeling a bit peckish…but only if you’re sure you’re ready for a nice meal.”

“When have you ever known me NOT to be ready for a nice meal?” Ratigan winked, making both of them laugh. Before they headed out together, Sarah set the box of baby clothes next to the cradle, waiting to be more thoroughly looked through later.
This is a belated birthday gift for my dear :iconwingsofasong:. Sorry it's late, dearie, hope you still like it.
